3/16/2021 – Intersection Plans for Iowa Highway 10

Orange City’s council was urged by Iowa Department of Transportation officials to consider building a roundabout instead of a traditional intersection at Iowa Highway 10 and Jay Avenue. District 3 assistant engineer Shane Tymkowicz says that location is a good spot for a roundabout.

Tymkowicz suggested Orange City consider a roundabout here.

Roundabouts are a cheaper, safer alternative to the traditional stoplight intersection.

The city must decide soon as the DOT will need more time to carry out their plans.

The city could decide to go with the usual stoplight intersection, or a non-signaled intersection with extended right turn lanes. Tymkowicz says roundabouts are safer because traffic has to slow down to navigate through them. Plus, the DOT can apply state safety funding to such a project.
