Strong winds on Tuesday contributed to a pair of field fires in Sioux County. Emergency management Director Nate Huizenga says most of the fire departments on the west side of the county were out battling fires.
The fires were so hard to handle that Huizenga was asked to put out an unusual message.
Field fires present unique problems to firefighters and farmers. Sioux County Emergency Management Director Nate Huizenga says extinguishing the fire is difficult.
Trying to outmaneuver fires through the smoke they create is another concern. Huizenga says that’s where they run the risk of getting equipment stuck and people injured. High winds today create a fire hazard in farm fields for a second straight day.
The two fires burned mainly stubble and haybales. No injuries were reported. The same conditions are anticipated today.
